Winter - Golf Show Issue
A note from the Publisher, Jay Royle:
The game of golf could not be in a better place and Midwest Golfing Magazine is honored to promote its continual ascent throughout our 12-state distribution area for our 24th year!
Our Golf Show Issue begins with a cover feature on BOYNE Golf, which now consists of 11 courses over three dynamic resorts all within 30 minutes of Petoskey, Michigan. Their world-famous Bay Harbor Golf Club might get the most national recognition, but as Editor-in-Chief Glen Turk reports, each course and resort at Boyne offers an elevated experience for all that traverse to Northern Michigan.
Roughly three hours south of Boyne resides Tullymore Golf Resort in the sleepy town of Stanwood. When combined with St. Ives GC, the property features affordable stay and play packages and the ability to get away from the big city without the longer drive up north as Glen is thrilled to point out.
We also take pride in helping Midwesterners plan their next great golf trip. To that end, lead staff writer Matt Tevsh provides an update on what has made the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail the envy of all other trails since 1992. Matt wasn’t the only one on the move this winter, as Glen Turk had the chance to experience Horseshoe Bay Resort outside of Austin, Texas, and came away thoroughly impressed. Three public Robert Trent Jones Sr. gems along with one Jack Nicklaus private layout, combine to form a magical year-round destination.
Our Distinctive Destination feature takes us to Fort Myers, Florida, and their 20+ courses within Lee County. Glen Turk visited the area for the first time in 2024 and is thrilled to report the region is almost fully recovered from Hurricane Ian. Glen made his trip count as he headed from Fort Myers to and the annual PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando. The industry continues to explode on the equipment side as Glen details in his Editor’s Choice Awards from the show.
Short courses are all the rage as Deb Patton chronicles seven new ones that opened in the Midwest within her From the Forward Tees article. Speaking of forward tees, that’s where Bryson DeChambeau and Steph Curry played from when they broke 50 for the first time on YouTube last year. Former Milwaukee County Club Assistant Pro Pat Steffes is now the Head Pro at Lake Merced GC, host course of the amazing achievement. Pat was kind enough to provide a behind-the-scenes look at history being made and the feature is a really cool read!
In-home golf simulators are also surging, and the Milton, Wisconsin-based Carl’s Place is at the forefront of the latest technology and affordability per Matt Tevsh. Finally, a Golf Show Issue of MGM wouldn’t be complete without Chip Shots, Ask Annex, and our Pro Page with Michael Crowley from Morningstar Golf Club.
